TEMPEST training
Learn how to identify threats and put in place countermeasures to combat them
Eligibility
To apply for these courses, you must be:
- a UK citizen, or citizen of a NATO / EU member country
- working in a role that requires you to have access to NATO TEMPEST policy standards
You must also be employed by one of the following:
- a government or public body in the UK, a NATO / EU member state or Five Eyes
- a private-sector organisation in the UK, a NATO / EU member state or Five Eyes that has a contract, on which you are working, with a government department in the UK, a NATO / EU member state or Five Eyes
If you are a NATO or EU attendee, you must provide a letter from your National Technical Authority to UK NACE to support your request to attend. This will be checked through the NCSC.
Minimum security clearance
You must also have one of these minimum levels of security clearance:
- UK nationals: Security Check (SC)
- NATO member country nationals: NATO Secret
- EU member state nationals: EU Secret

It is designed to provide participants with an overview of electromagnetic (EM) security and TEMPEST.
The course covers:
- policy requirements and practical security issues that personnel need to consider when working on TEMPEST issues
- effective installation and maintenance protocols to mitigate risk
- UK policy and international standards

This course is suitable for government and industry practitioners who require an understanding of how TEMPEST phenomena can be exploited to compromise electronic processing of protectively marked assets.
CPTAS TEMPEST Testers Team Member Course

This training course is run on behalf of the NCSC.
It provides a theoretical and practical understanding of Platform TEMPEST testing of transmitter systems, to meet the requirements of the NATO SDIP standards and UK guidance documents. The course also includes an examination to meet the CPTAS Platform Team Member role requirements.
The course covers:
- simple test matrices
- TEMPEST test equipment familiarisation
- transmitter testing, measurements and analysis
- Platform Facility Qualification Requirements
- Platform Team Member theory and practical examinations at the end of the course
Who this course is for
To attend, you must:
- successfully complete the TEMPEST Testers Pre-Requisites Course
- meet the eligibility criteria
This course will be booked in conjunction with a TEMPEST Tester Pre-Requisites Course. It will be scheduled to run 2 weeks after you have completed that training.
CFTCS TEMPEST Testers Team Member Course

This training course is run on behalf of the NCSC.
It provides a theoretical and practical understanding of Product TEMPEST testing and certification, to meet the requirements of the NATO SDIP standards and UK Guidance documents. The course also includes an examination to meet the CFTCS Product Team Member role requirements.
This course covers:
- product testing test matrices
- USB / ethernet / scanners / printers
- inbuilt transmitter testing
- H Field testing
- nontunable test requirements and techniques
- black / power line testing
- product team member theory and practical examinations at the end of the course
Who this course is for
To attend, you must:
- successfully complete the TEMPEST Testers Pre-Requisites Course
- meet the eligibility criteria
This course will be booked in conjunction with a TEMPEST Tester Pre-Requisites Course. It will be scheduled to run 2 weeks after you have completed that training.
TEMPEST Testers Team Member Pre-Requisite Course

This training course is run on behalf of the NCSC. You must complete this course before attending either a Product or Platform Team Member role course.
It provides a theoretical and practical understanding of basic TEMPEST testing aspects, to meet the requirements of the NATO SDIP standards and UK guidance documents.
The course covers:
- standards and policy
- signal and test parameters
- TEMPEST test equipment familiarisation
- signal measurement
- automated testing and basic signal analysis

- have a technical background in radio frequency, electronics and / or communications
- meet the eligibility criteria
CPTAS TEMPEST Testers Team Leader Course
- Length: 5 days

This training course is run on behalf of the NCSC.
It gives a theoretical and practical approach to the analysis of TEMPEST signals on Platforms and the creation of test matrices suitable for Platform First of Type testing. The course also includes an examination to meet the CPTAS Platform Team Leader role requirements.
The course covers:
- signal identification and analysis
- Wi-Fi transmitter testing, measurements and analysis
- Platform First of Type Test Matrix Generation
- Platform Team Leader examination at the end of the course
Who this course is for
To attend, you must:
- be an experienced TEMPEST Tester already certified under the CPTAS scheme
- meet the eligibility criteria and minimum security requirements
